TRADITION AND COMMUNITY

The December scene was always the same. After struggling to locate parking in a small cubbyhole on Ashland Avenue, my father, brother, and I trekked through the melting sleet that laid claim to the sidewalks and curbs of Andersonville. Our simple quest proved more formidable each year as we challenged fellow Swedish gladiators lurching for numbers and awaiting their turns in the delicatessens in search of precious ingredients for Christmas Eve smorgasbord. A visit to Simon’s Tavern was always imminent after grasping #109 while the deli clerk shouted for #34. At Simon’s, we could reminisce about the old year and toast to the new, while avoiding the throngs of shoppers who wrestled for supremacy as they made their way to the glass cases of the deli counter in search of culinary delights.
